Distance is one of the subtlest and best of the higher-level strategies. Even the newborn baby appreciates the chance to take a breath or two between interactions.

On a longer time-scale, moving subtly away from intense interaction with a person—waiting longer between interactions, keeping interactions briefer—is a subtle and potent way of modulating a relationship.
